James's Pumpkin Bread

Sunday, I baked pumpkin bread for an old friend. I only bake it once a year, and only for James. The recipe was handed down to me from my mother. I am not sure how she acquired the recipe.

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 16 ounce can of pumpkin
3/4 cup of water
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 cup of chopped nuts (I use walnuts.)

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. In a separate bowl, stir together the pumpkin and oil. Stir in eggs, one at a time, add water. Mix on medium for 2 minutes. Stir in walnuts.

Pour into greased and floured coffee cans to half full. Bake at 325° for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Makes 3 cans of pumpkin bread.

Wish List

Today is the last day of the Texas Back-to-School Tax Free Weekend. Consumers do not pay tax on clothing, shoes, school supplies and a few other items if the purchase is above $100. Last year, I save a great deal making purchases for other family members. This year, there is NOTHING we need. Our cubboards, closets, and office/school supplies are full. We are fortunate, indeed.

Here are some items that I started to purchase this weekend. These are not needs, but wants. I changed my mind and will see how long I can go without making a purchase. Of course, I'll buy gasoline and food and toiletries, but none other for a while.

R.I.P. Eunice Kennedy Shriver

1921-2009

I, too am deeply saddened by the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. I am saddened, not because of her passing; for she led a life full of caring, compassion, philanthropy, and empathy towards others. I am disappointed our world possesses not enough like her. Ms. Shriver taught the world how to respect those among us who are often treated with less dignity.

August Recession Challenge

This is my best friend Pat. We have been theatre buddies since 1993. We attend Miller Outdoor Theatre perormances together. Sometimes there is a group of us; sometimes, just the two of us. We always attend the FREE summer performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre:
Twelfth Night
Pericles
The Wiz
My Fair Lady
Music Man
Mama Mia

Since ushers do not tear ticket stubs at the door. You can keep your tickets and use them as bookmarks. They come in handy when reading and waiting in the box office lines for more FREE tickets.

Last time I did not attend the play with Pat, but with my other friend Donna. We made a picnic of it. Our menu included rice crackers (gluten free!), tomato and roasted pepper humus, grapes, puff dried snow peas, fig newtons (also gluten free), and white zinfandel.

Above is the borrowed book I was reading to pass time while in line for tickets. This is the view from my place in line.

Happy 100th

Today marks my 100th post!

When I started this blog, I mostly chronicled my daily events. Since January 2009, Hannah's Mom has evolved to just a general "keeping up with..." for friends, family, and other followers.

I receive quite a few comments and questions from friends. Here are my responses to some of the most common ones:

1. Yes, I would love to include more fashion posts or start a daily fashion one. I may some day. Kismira inspired me to start this blog.

2. I do not always agree with field negro, but I do follow his blog. I admire Field for speaking his mind and his expression is interesting. Field would probably refer to me as "House".

3. I do not include some of the movies I have created because they are related to my "nine to five". I may create others or add some Animoto ones.

4. My answer to "Are you serious with your wish lists?" "Do you really want me to buy that for you?" My answer: Ask Frank Nelson!

Naomi Sims & Twelfth Night

R.I.P. Naomi Sims

When one is in love one always begins by deceiving oneself and ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls romance. Oscar Wilde

Last night, I attended a production of Twelfth Night at Miller Outdoor Theatre's Shakespeare Festival. This was my third time seeing MOT's production of it. I recommend it as a "go see." You may like to see more of Bob Boudreaux; for his role was a cameo. In recent years he had larger parts, but this year was a return to a cameo. If you seek comfort in a familiar face, Rutherford Cravens as Sir Toby is a fine staple of our Houston festival. Guy Roberts is over the top! David Wald as Feste brought an unexpected, but well placed pop culture flavor to the production. Best of all, the temperature in the seated section was excellent 'can't wait to see Pericles.

The photo above shows my ticket and the Playbill from Miller Outdoor Theatre's July production of 42 Street.
