Fashion Friday: Be Be, Balmoral, and Dansko

These are the new objects of my affection. I cannot find my size. Over the next few days, I shall be preoccupied with stalking these Bebe Sport Bon Ton Go Girls in black.
I can order the Pumas today, but my rebellion against consumerism is forcing me to wait until next Tuesday. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will not win!

I have been stalking the Danskos below for over two months. There are rumors that these are made in narrow width, but I have not seen a trace.
Same story with the red and black riding Pumas.

The Released

This Veterans' Day had me thinking about Rambo, yes Rambo. I was thinking about what happens to a lot of our soldiers when they return home. This train of thought also led me to remember The Drag near UT in Austin. I remembered this story on Frontline.

Seven Plus Art

Today's post consists of two book recommendations and my last night's experiences of over seven hours on art. I attended two poetry readings, an art show and reception, and viewed a film which satisfied my geeky fascination with old world mystical charm and meets science and futuristic capabilities.

First, I attended a poetry reading and family reunion of sorts. Poet and educator Daniel Garcia, a.k.a. The Poet Mariachi delivered the most entertaining reading and signing at Heights Books Libros. This was Daniel's first reading in his hometown. He was born in Houston, but left for the valley when he was a young child. He and his wife now teach in Mission, TX. How fortunate are his students! Daniel's poetry is best when read aloud by him; for it is a celebration of oral language and a commentary on words. His delivery makes one picture him on a stage doing stand up. However, the way Daniel reads words is not just fun for the sake of being funny. The meaning in his collection of poetry and drama in You Know What I'm Sayin'? is deep. No matter what culture or class one comes from, closing ones eyes and listening to Daniel's written words weave a rich and vivid tapestry when touched by his voice. His colorful stories transport one to a universal and familiar comfort of one's own home and mores of growing up and coming of age.

I also recommend Black Wings by fellow Longhorn and Houstonian Sehba SawarSehba is also founding director of Voices Breaking Boundaries.

After leaving the Heights, I attended a nice gathering at Sehba's home. The event was to honor social justice workers Houstonian Daniel Bustamante and Sehba's father, Dr. Mohammad Sewar, a Pakistani university professor who led student uprisings in the '50s. The gathering was also a celebration of Houston's East End, a neighborhood rich from the diverse gifts of various Hispanic cultures.

VBB's Living Room Art also included a greeting from activist and philanthropist Sissy Farenthold, alter art from friend Michelle Barnes, and poetry by friends Donna Garrett and Jacsun Shah. Dr. Shah is also a founder of VBB.

You must have noticed that some of my past blogs are leaning to the steampunk art of existence. When I arrived home, I read a few pages of Know What I'm Sayin' ? before retiring with the perfect SP movie; League of Extradonary Gentlemen.

Back Home

I am spending Halloween and All Saints Day in Austin!!!!! We left Houston this morning. With Kerbey Lane so far away, my friend suggested we stop in Chappel Hill for breakfast. I found a Halloween costume at the Burger King there. Don't ask! We spent most of the day at the Texas Book Festival and on South Congress. After the festival, we had lunch at Mr. Natural. Then on to South Congress. I am the luckiest woman in our universe; I found a spot right in front of the door of Lucy in Disquise - Elecrtic Ladyland. Of course Electric Ladyland had a line down the block. I did a pretty good job of not overspending at Tesoros. The evening involved me missing a Halloween dinner theatre, but, not to my disappointment, I went trick-or-treating and had a wonderful dinner at Whole Foods. I saw an impressive Michael Jackson who was not bad or mocking at all. This one even had a wife dressed as a cat and an adorable baby safely and smugly tucked in the grocery cart as they shopped. I and even babysat some stranger's dog while her daddy shopped in the store. I then spent the most refreshing rest of the night working on my short story at a near North Side coffee house. When I decided to leave or, let the truth be told, I was confronted with the nightie night patron chant of "you don't have to go home, but..." I decided that hot chocolate and finishing up my story in my hotel room would be the perfect way to end Halloween night. Upon realizing that I was not staying my usual place, but a more reasonably priced one where my friend made reservations, I remembered that I did not have access to hot water for brewing chocolate. Then the most scarriest thing happened. I went to an Austin Walmart after midnight to look for an electric tea kettle. I did not find a tea kettle to my liking, but I left with trail mix, orange juice, and a Lornhorn mini duffle bag. Reminds me of the episode of Southpark where Wall Mart, not our beloved Walmart, is a wasteland of zombielike creatures who roam the store after midnight looking for nothing in particular.
